Finally! I say finally because the last post on my blog was published more than one month ago. If you are not up to date with my Akademisk Boldklub save story you can read all the previous parts here. I finally finished the 2021/2022 season which was very succesfull for our side thanks to some reasons.
New stadium + kits
The first one is very simple – we have new stadium with 10.000 capacity with the potential to be expanded to a capacity of 20.000 and is called “AB Stadium”. It had been necessary for the club to take out a loan of £8.81M in order to complete the works. The all-seater stadium have undersoil heating.
I also made new home and away kits for this and next season. I changed from Hummel to Adidas.
We were not in easy situation this summer because some of our players wanted to leave for bigger clubs around Europe and they did not want to renew contract so there were a risk we lose them for a free.
But it ended with success for all of us because most of these players signed new contracts after we have won the DBU Pokalen last season and we were able to play in Europa League Group Stage. There was only one exception.
Midfielder Malthe Skovsmose wanted to leave for at any cost. He was most valued player of the squad and he was highly wanted in France and Germany. After some negotiation he signed fo AC Ajaccio for a fee around 2,4M with 30% from his next transfer.
We also sold midfielder William Kvist who became unwanted at the first team. He had not played many matches during last season and he was very unlucky. Another players left club for a free or on-loan and some of them did not find a new club so they retired from football.
We also had to bring some new faces to the squad. We bought CD Kevin Sandberg from Brondby for only 8K, midfielder Marco Ramkilde from Mjondalen for 75K and Sten Kristensen from Helsingor for a free. Our academy graduate Thomas Randrup came back to the club for a season-long loan from Red Bull Salzburg.
And there was also a free transfer of experienced left defender Marcus Olsson. This transfer was absolutely against my transfer policy but fans was absolutely extatic by this signing and they bought shirts with his name most of all players.
During winter transfer window we signed striker Kenni Aakjaer from SonderjyskE for 325K and you will see bellow that it was perfect signing.
Europa League Group Stage
Thanks to a win in DBU Pokalen last season we were able to play the main phase of the Europa League. We were not too much lucky with the draw because we got SS Lazio, Bayer Leverkusen & Standard Liege.
We started the group with a solid 1-1 draw with Standard at home thanks to a goal by Michael Fisker but we lost the rest of the games in the Group. With Lazio 2-4 and 0-2, with Bayer 0-2 and 1-4 and with Standard 0-4 away from home.
All three home matches were sold out so that was positive. It was very useful experience for all our young players.
We were again tipped for relegation battle but it was very successful year for us. We started this campaing with variable results in September we started very good run of results. We have not lost 12 games in a row and only three of these matches finished with the draw.
There were great results like 5-1 win against Hobro or 4-1 win in derby against Lyngby and 4-2 win over very strong Aalborg side.
We have reached the Championship Group of Superliga for the first time after promotion to the top flight thanks to a third place after 26 league matches.
AB lost the first two matches in this group against FC Kobenhaven and Brondby but we have played fantastic football despite losses. But we were not loosers in the Championship Group.
We beat Lyngby, Nordsjaelland (away, the best performance of the season), Brondby and Midtjylland. Despite losses against FC Kobenhaven and Midtjylland in the last match of the season we finished SECOND in the leage.
That means we will fight for the Champions League from Best Placed Third Qualifying Phase.
DBU Pokalen 2021/2022
We won the Danish Cup last year as you all know and I wanted to win again this year. We beat Rishoj BK, BK Frem and Naesby in the second, third and fourth round. We played with youngsters and with rotation squad but it was very easy for my players.
There were more harder opponents from Quarterfinal and we needed the strong side. We beat Nordsjaelland in the Qtr Final after penalties and played against Aalborg in the Semi Final. The first game ended with a 1-1 draw away from home.
We were absolutely brilliant in the second leg and we won 3-0 thanks to a goals by Alexander Ludwig, Trygve Mork and Nichlas Meyer.
After great league matches against our biggest rival – Lyngby BK – there was another one in the Cup Final. We scored four goals in the first half and two of them in one minute but it was very interesting drama until the end.
Lyngby came back to the game thanks to three goals during 17 minutes after the break but Mathias Jensen scored our fifth goal three minutes before the end and we won 5-3.
It is second DBU Pokalen trophy in a row for us and another one club is able to play in European competition thanks to it.
“Just pass me the ball and let’s celebrate”
If missed something during last two seasons in Superliga it was proper striker who is able to score more than only 5-10 goals during season. We had that type of striker when we played in lower league but not after the promotion.
I realy wanted someone who will fit to our squad and I scouted and watched Kenni Aakjaer for many weeks before I bought him from SonderjyskE for £325K. He played for Galten, Midtjylland, Thisted and for SondersjyskE before he joined our club. He scored eight goals in the 18 matches in NordicBet Liga (2nd division) for his former club.
We bought him only two weeks before the second part of the season started and he played 72 minutes in the last friendly. In the first 3 league matches he played 263 minutes and scored 6 goals. He had a rating 8.8, 8.8 and 9.1. Great start.
He was not able to play in the DBU Pokalen because he played for his former club this season yet. He played 13 league matches and scored 14 goals and he had 7.56 average rating. He was named the Best Superliga player of the Month for February, March and April.
I really hope he will continue with scoring goals like that…
Stats & Finances at the end of the 2021/2022 season
Marco Ramkilde was a best goalscorer with 17 goals in all competitions and he scored all his goals from the right wing. Central Midfielder Alexander Tved Hansen had the highest average rating 7.25 and he is the most wanted and most valued player of our squad.
Midfielder Nichlas Meyer had 14 assists and midfielder Casper Rasmussen had the best pass completion with 78%. Alexander Tved Hansen collected 16 yellow cards in all competitions combined.
We scored 64 goals in the league and conceded 49. It was for the first time in the last five season we were not the best team in collecting yellow cards. We had only 64 in the league. Lyngby had 70.
We were the best in two stats – we made 534 fouls and we won 1222 tackles during Superliga season. We conceded only 2 goals from corners this season and we conceded 0 goal from free kicks.
We had a average attendance 6015 which means 60% of capacity during this season. It should be more next season…
Club earned £1,800,000 thanks to a Europa League Prize Money and £1,163,072 for TV Revenue.
