FM17 | Reading FC | part XXXIV | Legends retired

If you follow my FM17 journey with Reading FC you know I decided to stick with many players from the original squad. Two of them are defender Jordan Obita and striker Dominic Samuel.

I reached the year of 2029 and I knew just before the end of this season it will be sad summer. These two players decided to retire from professional football at the age of 35.

Jordan Obita

Let’s start with a long-serving captain. Jordan made his senior debut for Reading in 2010 in real life. He was named our vice-captain at the start of our second season and one year later he became also vice-captain of Nigeria.

Three years later he was named Reading captain and one year later Nigeria captain and he remained Nigeria captain until 2025.

Jordan was able to play in every position at the left side of the pitch and he was our left defender first choice for the whole time of this save as we don’t use wide midfielder/winger in this save as we use narrow formations.

In the first season of this save he played 40 league matches, scored two goals and made one assist. He finished the season with an average rating of 6.57.

His best season was probably the 2021/2022, our third in Premier League. He played 34 league matches, scored 6 and made 8 assists. He was voted man of the match three times and his average rating was 7.55. He played 46 matches in overall this season and scored 8 goals and made 10 assists.

During the last two seasons, he played fewer matches as his physical attributes were worse and worse and young regen Joe Fogden was in better form and he was more suited to our style with the higher tempo.

I was happy to keep him in the squad until he decides to retire and this decision became real a couple of weeks before the Champions League Final 2028/2029. He was captain as always in the Final and he could celebrate our 7th Champions League win in a row in style.

During this save he played 499 matches and scored 50 goals.

He decided to become a coach after his retirement and I signed a contract with him so he became member of our U18s staff.

Dominic Samuel

When I started this save Dominic Samuel was back in Reading after his loan spell in Gillingham in 2015/2016 season in real life. I knew I don’t want to send him for another loan. I knew I want to make him my first choice striker.

And it was a great choice. In the first season of the save he made 43 Championship appearances and scored 26 goals, none of them from the penalty kick. He also made 6 assists and he finished this season with an average rating of 7.06.

His best season was the 2018/2019 when we won the promotion to the Premier League. He played 41 league matches, scored 28 goals and made 11 assists. He also played 4 domestic cup matches in which he scored 6 goals.

As I wrote in the past, he was injured before our return to the top flight so I gave a chance to Danny Loader at the start of the first Premier League campaign… The rest is history as all of you know, Danny became goalscoring machine.

But Dominic was his best partner in our strike force and he scored twenty goals in the first Premier League season and 26 in the 2021/2022 season. He was able to score 10+ goals in another three seasons but his playing time was more and more limited by injuries.

In the 2027/2028 season, he played only 15 matches and scored three goals. And the last season was the worst of all as he was able to make only 3 appearances in the first team and scored no goals.

But as he decided to retire his career record is fantastic. He played 473 matches and scored 255 goals for Reading FC. Absolutely great striker.

And that’s all about these two great players for this time. Some players from the original squad still remain in the first team so hope for other successful years together.

If you’re interested in some screens or other info from the save just let me know.
