It looks like every my Football Manager save includes at least one player who deserves to be mentioned more than others.
Nichlas Meyer during my FM16 save with AB Copenhagen, Danny Loader or Liam Kelly last year during save with Reading and many other players about I didn’t write in the past because I didn’t have a website and I wrote a less. And mainly in the Czech language.
Football Manager 2018 and my save with BFC Siófok is also the same. This time my praise and a tribute go to midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
As you may know, I tried to use a specific transfer policy and I tried to buy players from specific towns.
As we grew up during the seasons it was harder and harder to find good players within the area but on the other hand, I was able to bring Hungarian players from abroad who were born in this area.
For example Olivér Horváth, Bertalan Kun or Dominik Szoboszlai…
To bring Dominik back to his nation and close to his hometown Székésféhervár was one of my aims of this save. We started this save in summer 2017 when he was 16 years old and he was a player of Austrian side FC Liefering.
He played there until summer 2020 and he played 60 league matches, scored 25 goals and made 13 assists before he left to AZ Alkmaar for €4K.
Yes, you read it right. Just for €4K.
Dominik became a very good midfielder in the Holland Eredivisie despite he played the first season mainly for Jong AZ but his second season in Holland was fantastic as he played 48 matches and scored 20 goals.
When I saw these stats I was sure I will not be able to sign him. I was sure he will go to some big club. But he spent the next three seasons with AZ and scored 22 goals in 65 matches.
We, BFC Siófok, were already the domestic dominant team and we were established Champions League team in 2025 and I decided I will buy Dominik for whatever price.
It was the most stupid surprise when I saw the asking price. Dominik was unhappy at AZ and they wanted only €650K for him. I would be happy to pay €10M or more to just have him in Hungary.
[Especially as he is much more valued in saves of many other FM players. The last example is Ed Wilson’s save with PSV (join his FMSlack channel to follow his perfect save) as he signed Dominik for £12.5M and sold him to Barcelona for a fee around £46.5M with a potential rise to £50M.]
His first season back in Hungary was decent. He played mainly as central midfielder within our 4-1-4-1 formation, he made 38(5) appearances, scored 12 goals and made 15 assists.
He was named club vice-captain two years after his arrival and he was, of course, one of the key players.
Same as in Hungarian national team with which he won the World Cup 2030. He scored a penalty kick in the final against France just before the halftime and he also scored one of Hungary four penalties in the penalty shootout to help Hungary to win the Mundial.
I thought it will be hard to keep him in our club as he developed into a perfect footballer and he was wanted by several clubs time by time. There was interest from Chinese clubs but also from some more popular clubs like Inter, Bayern or Manchester United.
The biggest win of our common life in Siófok was when the club board accepted the bid around €25M from Inter and Atlético Madrid but Dominik refused to go to both clubs and he rather signed a new deal with Siófok.
He became our best player, the best free kicks and corner kicks taker, he scored goals for a fun after our perfect short throw-in routine and he was named the club captain after he came back from the winning World Cup 2030.
He played 211 league matches and scored 46 league goals in the first eight years with Siófok. The 2030/31 and 2031/32 seasons were statistically not good. He scored only seven goals in 49 matches and he also had some injuries.
And he made the best decision – he ended the international career after 134 international caps with 19 goals 🇭🇺
Two years later, in June 2036 he finally got his hands on the most important trophy after BFC Siófok won the Champions League after successful Final against Tottenham.
During this season he played mainly in Mezzala/Attack role and he scored some similar goals as with CM/A role. But still, every time he stepped up to free kick I wanted to see something like this…
The season 2035/2036 was the last when he played in the role with attack duty or in the role with “Get Further Forward” instruction because his physical attributes were lower and lower and I decided to move him to the more static role to keep him at least one or two years in the squad.
Same as I tried some new formations during the save it usually ended with a return to my favourite 4-1-4-1.
This season 2035/2036 was statistically his best season as he played as CM/A with More Risky Passes instruction.
He played 43 matches in the starting XI, scored 16 goals and made 9 assists. He was named a player of the match ten times during the season and he was the best-rated player at the end of the OTP Bank Liga campaign.
It would be much more if he would not be injured last month of the season.
The 2036/2037 season was his last season. I decided to play him as a Deep Lying Playmaker with defend duty in DM slot.
I think he was a great player for this role at the end of his career especially with Dictates Tempo and Likes To Switch Ball To Other Flank player traits.
He didn’t need to be faster or stronger, he just needed to use his passing, decisions, vision and composure to be a brain of team play.
He managed to play 37(9) matches, scored 9 goals (8 of them from penalties) and made 2 assists.
Szoboszlai as a DLP/D in the last season…
Szoboszlai as Mezzala/A…
Szoboszlai as CM/A…
Szoboszlai as AP/S in AM slot…
It was great to have a player like this one again. It was great to be connected to a player who was so good at the game and it was a pleasure to follow his development.
Really looking forward to how this Hungarian young midfielder will develop in the real life.
Until that time, I will remember him as a BFC Siófok captain, leader and set piece maestro.
Despite his retirement from a professional career, I’m glad he didn’t retire from football at all.
One of the club legends will continue in our club as Under 19 assistant manager…
Until next time…
