Planning for success: A Football Manager guide

As virtual football managers, our worlds can get a little chaotic at times. We are always thinking, always planning. If you are anything like me then you will also like to control every aspect of your club; from top to bottom. At times, it can get a little daunting.

FM17 Tactic | Inverted Christmas Tree

Time from time I have to play something other than only my main save in concrete Football Manager. It’s not different in FM17 as I played for example with AEK or with Anzhi within FM Slack Tactics Challenge.

And a few weeks ago I made a step to the dark side as Guido like to say. Yes, you’re right. I decided to play with strikerless tactics.

FM Slack Tactics Challenge | FC Anzhi Makhachkala

As you may know we have Football Manager Slack community. This platform offers to all of us absolutely fantastic way how to talk between us and maybe more importantly it’s great way how to learn something new.

One of many interesting channels in FM Slack is also #fm17tacticschallenge. The first challenge was 4-5-1 formation with OGC Nice. I was unable to take part in this one but I decided to participate in the second one.

Football Manager 2017 | 0.2 The Second Steps

So with no reply or luck getting a reply from the Italian FA, I decide what the hell lets go back the UK and get my football career started. I enter the taxi on my way to Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli, excited and scared at the same time.

Who would be willing to take a chance on someone who has no experience from with in the world of football. The course is only for 150 pounds so worst case I will have more of insight of the game.

Football Manager 2017 | 0.1 The first steps

So where do I start with this journey that my life is, I guess I will start at the point where for some people I dropped off the radar for some people.

In 2002 I was living in London in an area called Albert Square. Some people who are from the UK will know Albert Square, sometimes it’s on TV. OK, OK it’s on TV 3 times a week and is a fictional area of London.

#FM17 | Reading FC | part XVI | Sextuple!

Welcome everybody! I finished the eighth season with Reading FC and you can read the usual summary on the lines bellow. This season was absolutely incredible as we won six trophies. Yes. SIX trophies. We lost only three competitive matches during this season, twice with Manchester United and once with Tottenham.

As I wrote in previous parts my Reading first team squad still includes 12 players from the original squad from the start of the save. My favorite players like Liam Kelly, Jake Cooper or phenomenal striker Danny Loader who was in fantastic form this season.

During the pre-season time I declined job offers from Arsenal, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan and also from France and Italy national teams.

#FM17 | Reading FC | Liam Kelly development

From not needed to key player. That’s the story of midfielder Liam Kelly in my FM17 save with Reading FC. This article will be something similar like the previous one about Danny Loader but there will be not too many goals in the fifth season like Loader scored.

Liam Kelly was 20 years old at the start of the save and he was one of many in the Under 23s Squad listed for loan and also transfer listed. Continue reading

#FM17 | Reading FC | Danny Loader development

One of the reason why I started a save with Reading FC in FM17 was to play with young players who are in the club at the start of the game. Jordan Obita, Dominic Samuel, Liam Kelly, Jake Cooper or Danny Loader.

And the last one made very good progress during the first five years with this save as he became the best Premier League goalscorer of the last season I played so far. Continue reading

#FM17 | Goalkeeper Instructions

Hi all, if you follow me on Twitter, you probably saw my tweet during last Sunday about the “Distribute To Full Backs” instruction which I have set to my goalkeeper(s). When I was on my way to my real life job I thought about it while I was stuck in a traffic jam and I decided to write something more about, above 140 characters.

It was one of the first tactical changes I made after a couple of matches when FM17 arrived. I’m not sure if I saw too many long balls during previous versions but during my first matches with this edition, I grew really frustrated that my goalkeeper started each new attack with a long ball to the half line: that was typically the end of our possession as opponent’s defenders easily get the ball.
